Doha: At least 20 people have been killed in the past 24 hours due to severe flooding in Pakistan’s Punjab province caused by heavy monsoon rains. The regional director of the Disaster Management Authority, Irfan Ali, said in a press statement Friday that the largest number of deaths was recorded in the city of Gujranwala. He added that the families of the victims will receive financial assistance of one million Pakistani rupees each.
According to Qatar News Agency, local reports indicated that more than one million people were evacuated from their homes this week in Punjab province after flooding worsened due to heavy rains and the overflow of water released from dams by India, which then flowed across the border into the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers shared by the two countries.
