4.8-Magnitude Earthquake Hit Northeastern Colombia


An earthquake measuring 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale hit the Santander department in northeastern Colombia.

The epicenter of the earthquake occurred 1 km from the city of Cepita in the department, at a depth of 155.9 km, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

There have been no reports yet of any human or material losses resulting from the earthquake.

In 1999, Colombia was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.1 magnitude which killed 1,185 people, left 700 others missing, injured at least 4,750 people, and displaced about 250,000 people. The city of Armenia was the most affected by the earthquake.
