5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northern Philippines

Ilocos norte: An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck Tuesday in Ilocos Norte province in northern Philippines.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located 430 km from the Pasuquin area in the province, with a depth of 430 km. Currently, there have been no reports of damage or casualties resulting from the earthquake.

The Philippines is known for its increased volcanic and seismic activity due to its position on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where tectonic plates frequently intersect. This geologic setting makes the country prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

The last significant earthquake in the Philippines occurred in October 2013, registering 7.1 on the Richter scale and resulting in the deaths of more than 220 people.
