6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Hits China’s Xinjiang

Doha: A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck China’s Xinjiang region on Thursday afternoon, according to China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC). The quake hit near the county of Akqi near the Kyrgyzstan-Xinjiang border at 3:44 pm local time (0744 GMT), with the epicentre at a depth of 10 km (6.2 miles), said CENC.

According to Qatar News Agency, so far, no casualties or significant structural damage have been reported. China is frequently struck by continental earthquakes, accounting for a third of the world’s destructive continental earthquakes, due to its location at the meeting point of the Eurasian, Pacific, and Indian Ocean plates, and as a result of active tectonic activity.
