6.0-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Southern Philippines Coast

Doha: A new 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck off the southern coast of the Philippines, less than 24 hours after two powerful tremors, 7.4 and 6.7 in magnitude, shook the region, raising concerns about renewed seismic activity. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake’s epicenter was located approximately 10 kilometers from the town of Cagwait in Surigao del Sur province, at a depth of about 59 kilometers.

According to Qatar News Agency, Arnel Pesinga, a fire official in Cagwait, said there were no immediate reports of injuries. ‘The quake lasted only about 30 seconds,’ he noted, ‘but it was sudden and very strong.’ Emergency and fire services are conducting joint damage assessments, though Pesinga added that they can’t determine the extent of the damage, as it’s already nightfall and very dark here.

It remains unclear whether the latest tremor is an aftershock of the two major quakes that struck the town of Manay in Davao Oriental province on Mindanao island Friday. In a related development, the Philippine National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said the twin earthquakes in Davao Oriental left seven people dead and more than 300 injured. Rescue and relief teams continue to assess damage and provide aid to affected communities.
