6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Peru

An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck the Arequipa region, southern Peru.

The Peruvian National Institute of Geophysics said in a statement that the earthquake, whose epicenter was in the Pacific Ocean, occurred near Caravelli province in the Arequipa region at a depth of 25 kilometers.

The authorities did not issue a tsunami warning after the earthquake.

The Peruvian National Institute of Civil Protection also explained in a statement that, “So far, no personal or material damages have been reported.” Peru is located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an area of intense seismic activity that extends along the western coast of the American continent, where 400 tangible earthquakes strike the country every year.

In March 2023, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Peru and southern Ecuador, killing at least 15 people and injuring others.

On August 15, 2017, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake in the Ica region, 325 kilometers south of Lima, killed more than 500 people.
