Nine people were killed and 11 other were injured as a result of a gas leakage at Ludhiana plant in Punjab, northwest India, on Sunday.

Indian police reported that the wounded were rushed to hospital, and that a team of doctors and ambulances had also been called to the scene.

The reason for the gas leak is unknown, police added.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached the spot to evacuate people and supervise the rescue operation.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann described the incident are “very sad”.

“The incident of gas leak of factory in Giaspura area of Ludhiana is very sad. Police, government and NDRF teams are present at the spot. All possible help is being provided. Rest details soon,” Mann said in a tweet.

In May 2020, at least six people were killed and more than 120 others were suffocated by a chemical gas leak from a southern Indian plant.

Plant explosions are a recurrent incident in India due to the failure to respect safety conditions. (QNA)
