Kabul: Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for Afghanistan’s caretaker government, announced Tuesday that the death toll from the earthquake that struck the country’s east on Sunday night has surpassed 1,400 people, with more than 3,100 others injured.
According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement, the spokesperson reported that 1,411 people were killed and 3,124 were injured in Kunar province alone, adding that more than 5,000 homes were destroyed in the affected region.
He also noted that relief operations are still underway, emphasizing the extreme difficulty of reaching remote affected areas, which could lead to a higher number of casualties and greater damage.
A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar in eastern Afghanistan. The country is frequently hit by earthquakes of varying magnitudes due to its location near the convergence point of the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
