Arab League Condemns Israel’s Recognition of “Somaliland” As Provocative Step

Doha: The Arab League on Friday expressed its strongest condemnation of Israel’s recognition of the so-called “Republic of Somaliland” as an independent state.

According to Qatar News Agency, in a statement, the Arab League affirmed its complete rejection of this move, considering it a blatant violation of international law and a flagrant transgression against the principle of territorial integrity and state sovereignty, a cornerstone of the UN Charter and international relations.

The statement asserted that this step, taken by an occupying power that daily commits grave violations against the Palestinian people and neighboring countries and disregards international resolutions, constitutes an Israeli aggression against the sovereignty of an Arab and African state.

It aims to work with third parties to undermine the stability of the region, disregarding any commitment to the rules governing state recognition under international law.

The statement affirmed that the Arab League Council, at both the summit and ministerial levels, considers the region of Somaliland an integral part of the internationally recognized and sovereign Federal Republic of Somalia.

It further stated that any attempt to impose unilateral recognition would constitute unacceptable interference in Somalia’s internal affairs and a dangerous precedent threatening regional and international security and stability.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced Friday the official recognition of the so-called “Republic of Somaliland” as an independent and sovereign state.

The so-called “Republic of Somaliland” is located in the northwestern part of Somalia, covering an area of 175,000 square kilometers. It unilaterally declared its independence in 1991 but has not yet received international recognition.
