Cairo: The Arab League has emphasized its enduring commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and strongly safeguarding the security and stability of the Arab nations. It expressed its full solidarity with the victims of terrorist acts and their families.
According to Qatar News Agency, the Arab League marked the Arab Day for Awareness of the Pain and Suffering of Victims of Terrorist Acts in the Arab Region, which annually falls on April 22. The League called for dedicating this day as an occasion for reflection and action to build more fair and safe communities.
Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Legal Affairs Sector at the Arab League, Dr. Mohamed El Amin Ould Akik, stated that this day represents an occasion to spotlight the travails of the victims of terrorist acts. He stressed the importance of recognizing their rights and providing redress for the psychological, social, health-related, and material harm they have endured.
This day further seeks to bolster the support extended to them and their families and to alleviate their ongoing suffering. The General Secretariat of the Arab League continues to exert sustained efforts to advance the rights of victims of terrorism, highlighted Ould Akik.
Ould Akik pointed out that the joint Arab meeting on assessing legal frameworks and strategies for the protection and promotion of the rights and needs of victims of terrorism will convene at the auditorium of the General Secretariat of the Arab League from May 26 to 28, 2025.
The meeting features high-level attendance from the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers (AIMC), member states’ representatives, officials from the specialized counter-terrorism mechanisms of the Arab League, alongside regional and international partners of the Arab League, he said.
In addition, Ould Akik highlighted that this event comes as part of the significant global interest in the issue of victims of terrorism. He noted the United Nations International Conference on Victims of Terrorism hosted by Spain from Oct. 8 to 10, 2024, co-chaired by Spain and Iraq.
The conference focused on galvanizing international support, including that of member states and civil society, for the rights and pressing needs of victims, while fostering tolerance and resilience within communities afflicted by terrorism. It further underscored the indispensable role played by victims and survivors as educators, agents of change, and architects of peace.
The day intends to commemorate the date that marks the signing of the Arab Convention on the Suppression of Terrorism by the Arab Interior and Justice Ministers’ Councils in their joint meeting in 1998.
Through this convention and others, the Arab League proactively sought to combat terrorism after realizing its menace to the present and future of Arab nations.
