Arab League Workshop Explores Challenges of AI in Media Sector

Cairo: A workshop was held Sunday at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo, entitled: “Media and Artificial Intelligence: Opportunities and Challenges.” Addressing the opening session, the Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, said the workshop is a platform to share ideas and expertise on ways to leverage technology for the service of humanity.

According to Qatar News Agency, the event intends to review novel ideas that help envision the future of media in the AI era, in addition to exploring AI’s opportunities to enhance the media system and addressing the challenges facing this sector.

Media is undergoing an unprecedented transformation triggered by rapid advancements in AI, which have reshaped the media landscape. AI has ushered in a new era of massive potential that ranges from data analysis, automated content generation, and personalized news delivery based on audience interests to the creation of fully developed news reports, Khattabi pointed out.

He noted that the cutting-edge technologies, though they offer incredible opportunities to accelerate the velocity of information transference, also engender an avalanche of issues such as deepfakes and the impact of algorithms on public opinion trends.

In addition, Khattabi highlighted that media professionals and researchers bear responsibility in leveraging cutting-edge technologies to serve the public interest and ensure a responsible, fair, and credible media.
