British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps announced on Sunday that London will deploy its Typhoon fighter aircraft in Poland, a step he attributed to “the need to protect an ally from Russia.”
“In response to a request from our Polish friends, our Typhoon fighter jet will be deployed to Poland to support our NATO ally against the growing threat of Russian interference,” Shapps told the Conservative Party conference.
He added, "The deployment of fighter planes in Poland before the elections is a strong signal that Britain supports freedom and democracy among its allies."
Parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in Poland on October 15.
The British Defense Minister also announced that London had signed contracts worth 4 billion pounds with leading local companies to develop powerful attack submarines.
Shapps said: “I can announce that we have signed contracts worth £4 billion with leading British companies to stimulate the development of the most powerful attack submarines ever used by the Royal Navy.”
Yesterday evening, the new British Defense Secretary revealed that British forces will be deployed in Ukraine for the first time under plans being discussed with military commanders there, to transfer a formal British-led training program “to Ukraine” instead of relying on the bases of Britain and other NATO members.
In recent years, Russia has announced unprecedented NATO activity on its western borders, and the alliance is expanding its initiatives and calling them “containing Russian aggression.”
