Burkina Faso’s Defense Minister Kassum Coulibaly announced today, Saturday, that his country is preparing to support Niger in the face of the possible military intervention of the Economic Community of West African States “ECOWAS”.
“We are ready to support Niger and Burkina Faso is ready to withdraw from the ECOWAS group because its policy towards Niger is illogical,” Coulibaly said, in press statements.
Burkina Faso’s Defense Minister warned of the increased activity of armed groups in the region, in the event that Niger plunges into chaos, explaining that this will lead to the creation of favorable conditions for armed movements.
Yesterday, Friday, the Economic Community of West African States “ECOWAS” announced its readiness for military intervention to resolve the crisis in Niger, stressing that the military option is not its preferred option, but it found itself forced to do so because of what it called “the intransigence of the military council.”
ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Abdel Fattah Moussa said, in press statements during the conclusion of the summit of the group’s armies’ leaders, that any intervention to restore constitutional order in Niger will be short, adding that the participating countries agreed on the requirements for any intervention in Niger.
He stated that “a decision has been taken regarding the specific day for the military intervention in Niger…but we will not announce it,” noting that the matter depends on the issuance of a decision in this regard by the leaders of the Economic Community of West African States.
The military coup in Niger sparked angry international reactions, amid warnings of the repercussions of this dangerous step on the security of the African Sahel region.
