Canada Defense Minister Calls for Middle East De-escalation and Supports Qatar’s Peace Efforts

Doha: Canada has expressed deep concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East, warning of global consequences for security, trade, and economic stability, according to remarks made by HE Minister of National Defense David McGuinty.

According to Qatar News Agency, HE McGuinty, speaking in Doha, emphasized Canada's concern for the safety and security of the citizens and residents of Qatar and the entire Gulf region. He described the situation as challenging and expressed hope for a resolution. McGuinty called for a de-escalation and a sustainable cessation of hostilities, stating that Canada would collaborate with international partners to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open as an international waterway if stability is achieved.

McGuinty highlighted the global nature of the crisis, affecting oil supply, shipping, insurance, and global market stability. He warned of wider economic disruptions, including impacts on food production and fertilizer supply chains due to restrictions in maritime transport. He emphasized the need for multinational cooperation to resolve these issues.

Canada is engaging with international partners to provide support in maritime expertise, demining, and intelligence and space capabilities. Although not leading negotiations, Canada supports diplomatic efforts involving regional and global actors. McGuinty acknowledged Qatar's significant role in facilitating negotiations and stressed the importance of broader dialogue among multiple countries.

During his visit to Doha, McGuinty underscored the importance of growing bilateral ties between Canada and Qatar. He highlighted potential cooperation in defense and technology, including areas such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cryptography, and engineering research.

McGuinty warned of the crisis's impact on global systems, noting disruptions in air travel, rising prices, inflation, and increasing food costs. He stressed that the issue extends beyond the United States and Iran and requires global resolution. International efforts led by France and the UK, involving around 50 countries, are supporting stability and maritime security.

Concluding his remarks, McGuinty reiterated Canada's support for the Qatari people and its commitment to re-engaging directly in the region.
