China Brings Major Oilfield in Bohai Sea into Production

Doha: China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) announced Tuesday that a newly developed oilfield in the Bohai Sea has started production. The Kenli 10-2 oilfield, situated in the southern waters of the Bohai Sea, is noted as the largest lithologic oilfield discovered in China’s offshore areas, boasting proven geological reserves exceeding 100 million tones.

According to Qatar News Agency, the initial phase of development for this major oilfield will involve the production of 79 development wells. The project is expected to reach a peak daily output of 3,000 tones of oil and gas equivalent. Additionally, there is a planned second phase of development to further enhance production capabilities.

The oilfield presents significant technical challenges due to its complex heavy oil composition, despite being located in waters about 20 meters in depth. These complexities underscore the strategic importance of the Kenli 10-2 oilfield in China’s offshore resource development initiatives.
