GCC Countries Reaffirm Firm Commitment to Combating Human Trafficking in All Its Forms


The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries reaffirmed unwavering commitment to combating human trafficking in all its forms. They highlighted the significant measures they have implemented to prevent human trafficking, protect victims, and prosecute perpetrators, ensuring compliance with international human rights standards and the obligations arising from the relevant conventions to which the GCC countries are signatories.

This came in a statement delivered by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Dr. Hend Abdulrahman Al Muftah on behalf of the GCC countries. Qatar is the current chair of the GCC and presented the statement during the “Interactive Dialogue on the Report of the Special Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons” at the 56th session of the Human Rights Council.

The GCC countries expressed deep concern over the cases outlined in the Special Rapporteur’s report, emphasizing the importance of protecting the ri
ghts and dignity of all individuals, particularly women and children, who are often victims of and affected by the crime of human trafficking.

They also underscored the need to evaluate current practices in managing maritime migration to ensure respect for human rights and dignity. Furthermore, they reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation, strengthening legal and institutional frameworks, building capacities, and raising public awareness to effectively combat human trafficking.
