Germany Sets Preconditions for Dialogue with Russia Over Ukraine Conflict

Berlin: German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has declared that Germany is prepared to engage in talks with Russia, contingent upon Russia's demonstration of genuine commitment towards achieving peace with Ukraine. Merz emphasized that the current lack of seriousness from Russia in its discussions with Ukraine is a significant barrier to dialogue.

According to Qatar News Agency, Merz articulated that dialogue would only be meaningful if Russia showed a sincere interest in negotiating peace. He remarked, "If it makes sense to talk, we are ready," underscoring the need for Russia to exhibit genuine intent in addressing the conflict. Merz further stated that Russia is unlikely to cease hostilities until it faces substantial economic and potentially military depletion, suggesting that such a point is approaching.

Merz reiterated the necessity for Russia to acknowledge its readiness to discuss a ceasefire and a subsequent peace plan. He urged Moscow to terminate its aggression against Kyiv, underscoring the importance of making Russia understand that prolonging the conflict will not yield any additional benefits.

Furthermore, the German Chancellor highlighted that engaging in dialogue with Moscow "might seem logical as part of military, economic, political, and diplomatic efforts" to bring Russia to the negotiating table. However, he stressed that Moscow must first demonstrate a genuine willingness to discuss a ceasefire.

In a related development, the European Parliament recently approved a pound 90 billion loan to Ukraine to bolster its efforts against Russia, which includes funding for arms purchases.
