Counter, The Iraqi Ambassador to Ankara, Majid Al-Lajmawi, confirmed that Iraq looks forward to a strategic partnership and cooperation with neighboring Turkey in the water file in a way that guarantees the rights of the two countries, stressing that the water file constitutes a priority in the course of historical relations between the two countries.
A statement by the Embassy stated: “Al-Lajmawi received the Turkish Presidential Envoy for Water Affairs to Iraq, Faisal Eroglu, today, Tuesday, at the Embassy building in the capital, Ankara, and reviewed the Iraqi government’s procedures to implement the agreements and memoranda of understanding concluded between the two sides during the visit of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Baghdad.”
The Ambassador pointed out that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani stressed the need to continue communicating with the Turkish side to proceed with the steps to implement the agreements in parallel, and directed the ministries concerned with the memoranda of u
nderstanding to develop a clear work plan, under his direct supervision; in order to expedite implementation.
He explained the importance of preparing water projects, which will be implemented jointly between the two countries, and focusing on strategic projects that serve Iraq in the long term, in order to achieve the desired impact on the agricultural and water situation in Iraq.
For his part, the Special Envoy stressed Turkey’s readiness to cooperate with Iraq, and that its doors are open for dialogue and cooperation with the Iraqi technical committees concerned with water affairs, noting that the water file is a factor of strength between the two neighboring countries.
He stressed the importance of accelerating the transition from the old traditional irrigation to a developed method that would achieve a leap in implementing strategic projects for the water sector and water resources management, as the whole world is experiencing climate changes and population growth, and thus increasing demand for wate
