Israeli Attack on Iran an Uncalculated Escalation, Says Qatar’s Foreign Ministry

Doha: Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari stated that Israel’s attack on Iran represents an uncalculated escalation with serious implications for regional security, which is already fragile and cannot withstand additional crises.

According to Qatar News Agency, during the Ministry’s weekly press briefing, Al Ansari expressed deep concern over the situation, describing it as part of a recurring pattern of provocations. He emphasized that while many countries in the region are striving to reduce tensions, a singular regional actor continues to destabilize the area, undermining peace efforts.

Al Ansari strongly criticized the attack on nuclear and energy infrastructure, warning of its potential impacts on global energy markets and regional security. He highlighted the strategic importance of Gulf waters, not only for local water needs but also as a critical route for global energy supply.

Al Ansari pointed out the renewed diplomatic momentum in talks between Iran and the United States, supported by Qatar and others, but cautioned that recent escalations could disrupt these efforts. He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to working with regional and international partners to promote dialogue and prevent an unpredictable regional conflict.

He further explained the region’s significance, noting that about 30% of the world’s oil and fertilizers, and 25% of its natural gas, are transported through the area and the Strait of Hormuz.

Al Ansari expressed confidence in Qatar’s stable economy and reassured that the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change had not detected any water pollution. He added that the government is monitoring the situation closely, with maritime activity in the Strait of Hormuz remaining normal, and energy exports proceeding without interruption.

Addressing contingency plans, he confirmed that Qatar is prepared for various scenarios affecting both the energy sector and public safety, demonstrating readiness and resilience during past regional crises.

Despite the current stability in shipping and energy flow, Al Ansari warned that continued escalation could lead to dangerous and unforeseen consequences.

He stressed Qatar’s ongoing contact with regional and international allies to resolve the crisis and facilitate dialogue. Al Ansari highlighted Qatar’s active role in mediation efforts aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution to the escalating tensions.

Regarding Israel’s strike on Iran’s South Pars gas field, he expressed serious concern, noting the impact on international companies operating there and the potential threat to global energy security.

On the situation in Gaza, Al Ansari confirmed Qatar’s continued mediation for a ceasefire, although regional escalations, particularly between Iran and Israel, are hindering diplomatic progress.

He raised concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza, emphasizing the need for unconditional aid entry and the involvement of international organizations. Al Ansari dismissed justifications for blocking aid as disconnected from the reality on the ground.

During recent diplomatic outreach, HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs engaged in numerous discussions with counterparts, including Iranian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Abbas Araghchi, extending condolences and emphasizing efforts to halt aggression against Iran.

Al Ansari also highlighted discussions with key regional and international figures, focusing on de-escalation and resolving disputes through diplomacy.

In a related development, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi discussed the security of nuclear sites with Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA, reaffirming Qatar’s commitment to dialogue and security.

Al Ansari noted the recent Qatar-France Strategic Dialogue, which emphasized strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing regional challenges, particularly concerning Gaza.

He also mentioned meetings between Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad and UNRWA’s Commissioner-General, as well as Greek Deputy Foreign Minister, to enhance bilateral cooperation.
