Magnitude 4.2 Earthquake Strikes Southwest Iran

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake on the Richter scale struck Saturday Khuzestan Province, southwestern Iran.

The Iranian News Agency, IRNA, quoted the Seismological Center of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Tehran as saying that the earthquake occurred at dawn today in the city of Dezful, at a depth of 16 kilometers.

There have been no reports, so far, of the possible damages of this tremor.

It is noteworthy that Iran is exposed from time to time to earthquakes of different intensities, due to its location over a major fault area, the most violent of them was the one that hit the provinces of Gilan and Zanjan in the north of the country in 1990, when it had a magnitude of 7.7, killing 37,000 and wounding 100,000.
