Monsoon Rains in Nepal Kill About 40 People This Year

Monsoon rains in Nepal this year killed about 40 people and destroyed an important part of the country's infrastructure.

Government officials said, in statements on Tuesday, that the landslides caused by the heavy rains claimed the lives of at least one person, and a major highway closed this week, bringing the death toll from monsoon rains so far to 40, noting that these rains kill dozens of people every year, and others are lost as a result of landslides and resulting floods.

This year, 38 people have died and at least 33 people are missing, an official at the ministry said.

Police said landslides also blocked a major highway linking the capital with the southern plains.

Monsoon rains that fall on Nepal, the Himalayan country from June to September of each year, often leave behind dozens of dead and missing people in floods and landslides.
