Presidency of the Republic: Release of more than 12 thousand detainees and detainees whose sentences have ended

Baghdad: The Presidency of the Republic announced the release of more than 12 thousand detainees whose sentences have ended.

The Presidency of the Republic stated in a statement that “in order to apply human rights standards in detention and arrest centers and with the aim of expediting the completion of investigations with detainees and applying standards of justice and scrutiny of the files of the accused, and after receiving numerous complaints, the Presidency of the Republic, under direct instructions from President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, formed a committee that includes representatives of the Presidency of the Republic, the Ministries of Interior and Justice, the Supreme Judicial Council and the National Security Advisory.”

It added that “the relevant committee held several meetings, where its work resulted in the release of more than (12,000) detainees whose sentences have ended or were cancelled by the Court of Cassation.”

It added, “In this regard, the Presidency of the Republic affirms the President’s constant keenness to continue working in this field and not to spare any effort that would consolidate the foundations of the law and ensure its proper implementation that guarantees the achievement of a free and dignified life for all the people in all parts of Iraq without any leniency or discrimination.”
