Qatar and Costa Rica Strengthen Cultural Relations Through High-Level Visit.

San Jose: The visit of HH the Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to the Republic of Costa Rica marks a significant advancement in the relations between Qatar and Latin American countries. This relationship serves as a model of cooperation grounded in dialogue, mutual understanding, and shared interests across political, economic, and cultural domains, forming a crucial foundation for fostering closeness between peoples.

According to Qatar News Agency, HH the Amir’s visit to Costa Rica signifies an important step toward expanding cultural dialogue and enhancing mutual understanding. This cooperation embodies a shared vision aimed at achieving sustainable development by investing in the human and cultural connections that unite nations. Over the years, Latin American countries have warmly welcomed Arab peoples, extending their solidarity to Arab causes, particularly the Palestinian cause.

Costa Rica, located in Central America, is celebrated for its natural beauty and biodiversity, boasting dense forests an
d nature reserves teeming with wildlife. Since 1823, San Jose, the capital, has been recognized as a political and cultural hub, home to prestigious universities, cultural and artistic institutions, and numerous theaters. The establishment of an Islamic center in 2002 further underscores its cultural openness.

A pivotal moment in the cultural relations between Qatar and Costa Rica was the signing of a 2014 agreement to enhance cultural cooperation. This agreement included the exchange of events and expertise, participation in seminars and art exhibitions, and promoted the development of relationships between libraries and museums. It also facilitated researchers’ access to the preserved cultural heritage in both countries.

As part of Qatar’s engagement in international events in Costa Rica, the State of Qatar, represented by HE Minister of Environment and Climate Change Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, participated in the High-Level Event on Ocean Action themed “Immersed in Change” in Costa R
ica last June. During his address at the conference, HE the Minister emphasized Qatar’s efforts in marine environment protection, biodiversity preservation, and pollution prevention, achieved through legislation, marine reserves, research, monitoring of marine habitats and endangered species, and raising environmental awareness.

Regarding artistic and cultural cooperation, the Katara Cultural Village Foundation highlights the cultural relations between Qatar and Latin American countries through various events. One notable event was the “Roots” Festival, which showcased the cultures of Latin American countries, including Costa Rica, through a diverse array of musical performances, dance arts, and exhibitions.

In June 2022, coinciding with Qatar’s celebration of hosting the FIFA World Cup 2022, Katara, in collaboration with the Embassy of Costa Rica in Qatar, organized an event titled “Costa Rica, Soccer Culture”. The event featured musical performances, artistic displays, and sports exhibitions that reflecte
