Qatar Announces Ambitious Bid to Host 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Doha: The Qatar Olympic Committee has officially announced the country’s bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This initiative, led by HE President of the Qatar Olympic Committee and Chair of the Bid Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, underscores Qatar’s belief in the transformative power of sport to unite people, empower individuals, and unlock human potential. The bid is rooted in Qatar’s national vision, which sees sport as a catalyst for development and a medium for promoting peace and understanding among nations.

According to Qatar News Agency, this bid marks the culmination of a rich legacy of sporting achievements in Qatar, highlighted by the successful hosting of 18 world championships over the past two decades, including the acclaimed FIFA World Cup 2022. With advanced sports facilities, world-class infrastructure, and extensive organizational expertise, Qatar is poised to present a compelling bid for the 2036 Games. HE Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani has emphasized Qatar’s commitment to delivering an inspiring edition of the Games, reinforcing the country’s dedication to the Olympic movement and international sports development.

Al-Watan newspaper highlighted Qatar’s ongoing discussions with the International Olympic Committee as part of the bid process. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani stated that 95% of the necessary sports infrastructure is already in place, with a comprehensive plan to ensure full readiness. This plan is part of a long-term vision to create a sustainable legacy that is socially, economically, and environmentally beneficial. The bid is not just about organizing a successful tournament but delivering a global experience that promotes inclusion, sustainability, and international cooperation.

The Peninsula newspaper notes that if successful, Qatar would be the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to host the Olympic Games. This achievement would underscore Qatar’s exceptional organizational capacity and commitment to using sport as a tool for unity and development. The bid aligns with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy, both emphasizing human and social development, civic engagement, and global cooperation.

With 95% of the required sports infrastructure already established, Qatar is well-prepared for Olympic delivery. A national plan is in place to ensure 100% readiness of facilities, meeting international standards and sustainability objectives, reflecting Qatar’s advanced position on the global sports stage.
