Qatar Chairs Session of UN General Assembly Second Committee

Doha-The State of Qatar chaired a session for the Economic and Financial Committee (Second Committee) of the General Assembly at its seventy-seventh session.

The State of Qatar was represented by Third Secretary of the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani.

The State of Qatar had been elected as Vice-Chair of the Second Committee for the Asian and Pacific Group of States. The Second Committee deals with issues relating to economic growth and development such as macroeconomic policy questions; financing for development; sustainable development; globalization and interdependence; eradication of poverty; operational activities for development; agriculture development, food security and nutrition; information and communications technologies for development; and implementation of the New Urban Agenda.

The Committee considered the reports submitted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, including: Progress made in the implementation of and follow-up to the outcomes of the World Summit on the Information Society at the regional and international levels; Declaration on the Establishment of a New International Economic Order; Fulfilling the promise of globalization: advancing sustainable development in an interconnected world; International migration and development.

The election of the State of Qatar as Vice-Chair of the UN General Assembly Second Committee was in recognition of its role in strengthening the global partnership for achieving sustainable development, as well as its efforts in the field of development, working with partners and multilateral organizations, and providing the necessary resources and financing.

In this context, Qatar will host the second part of the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC5) in Doha from March 5 to 9, 2023. The State of Qatar looks forward for this conference to be a milestone event that meets the level of aspirations and expectations of the least developed countries and supports their path towards achieving sustainable and comprehensive development in the next ten years.

In line with its efforts to revitalize the United Nations General Assembly, the State of Qatar participates in the Second Committee by updating its working methods and practices to improve the quality of discussions and the impact of its deliberations and decisions, further simplify the Committees agenda and work program, hold interactive sessions with officials of the General Secretariat after presenting the technical reports, and to work diligently on the draft decisions taken during this session.
