Doha: The State of Qatar has reiterated its dedication to enhancing international partnerships through cooperation and multilateral efforts, aiming to support developing nations in achieving the 2030 Agenda of the Sustainable Development Goals. This commitment is demonstrated by fostering partnerships with UN agencies to deliver development and humanitarian aid to countries facing challenges beyond their control, as well as collaborating with the UN to implement the Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries (2022-2031).
According to Qatar News Agency, this declaration was made by Talal Abdulaziz Al Naama, Second Secretary of Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the UN, during the General Debate of the Second Committee at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. Al Naama highlighted the numerous challenges hindering the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, including wars, armed conflicts, humanitarian disasters, displacement, infrastructure destruction, and threats to vulnerable populations. He also noted the severe impacts of climate change and economic challenges like debt burdens, development financing scarcity, borrowing difficulties, and the digital divide.
Al Naama emphasized Qatar’s support for the General Assembly resolution 79/323, known as the Sevilla Commitment, adopted last August. The resolution calls for continued reforms of international financing structures to address current and future crises and strengthen efforts towards economic and social development. He noted that Qatar is advancing in its Qatar National Vision 2030, with a focus on building a diversified, sustainable knowledge-based economy through digital technology, science, and innovation, alongside infrastructure enhancement and productivity increase.
Additionally, Al Naama announced that Qatar will host the Second World Summit for Social Development in November, facilitating high-level discussions on accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. Qatar will also co-host with Brazil the inaugural meeting of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty leaders, an event occurring alongside the summit.
He further affirmed Qatar’s backing of the UN Secretary-General’s initiative to reform the international organization and reaffirmed support for the UN Resident Coordinator System for 2025-2026 with a $1 million contribution, aiming to boost operational efficiency and effectiveness in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
