Doha: Qatar and the United Kingdom have signed a letter of intent to bolster cooperation in peace, reconciliation, and conflict resolution. This development was announced by the Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, highlighting the strategic partnership between the two nations.
According to Qatar News Agency, the UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, David Lammy, praised the long-standing and robust relationship between the UK and Qatar. He emphasized that this partnership is built on friendship and mutual respect, and it is reinforced through the Qatar-UK Strategic Dialogue. Lammy highlighted shared areas of cooperation, such as science, innovation, development, mediation, health, and education, which benefit both countries.
Lammy noted that the strategic dialogue is vital and productive, with the partnership founded on a shared ambition. He stated that this collaboration will contribute to job creation, growth, and investment in both nations, reflecting a mutual desire for the UK to remain a stable investment destination and a growing economy, while also enhancing regional security.
The UK Foreign Secretary pointed out the strong, enduring partnership between the two countries, citing growth in UK tourism to Qatar during the World Cup and the increasing number of Qataris visiting the UK. He expressed optimism for an even more prosperous future through joint planning and commended the teams that have strengthened bilateral relations.
Lammy reaffirmed the importance of maintaining trade exchanges and anticipated achieving the goals of a joint trade agreement prepared last year. He praised Qatar’s mediation efforts in conflict resolution, particularly in the Gaza conflict, acknowledging Qatar’s role in mediating a ceasefire and securing the release of hostages, including those with UK connections.
He confirmed the UK’s commitment to working towards a two-state solution and close cooperation with Qatar on issues in Gaza, Sudan, Syria, Yemen, Iran, and Somalia. He emphasized the UK’s dedication to supporting humanitarian efforts and ensuring aid reaches those in need, particularly in Africa.
