Qatar Urges UN to Address Israeli Aggression on Gaza.

New York: The State of Qatar has called on the United Nations General Assembly to take decisive action to ensure an immediate halt to the ongoing Israeli aggression in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank. This appeal was made with the aim of implementing relevant UN resolutions that address the conflict.

According to Qatar News Agency, Qatar has also urged the General Assembly to address the systematic campaign against the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This request aligns with the mandate granted to the agency by the General Assembly under Resolution 302 (IV) of 1949. The statement was delivered by Her Excellency Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani, during a session at the UN headquarters in New York.

Her Excellency emphasized Qatar’s commitment to the veto initiative, reflecting its awareness of the General Assembly’s vital role under the UN Charter in maintaining international peac
e and security. She highlighted the “Uniting for Peace” resolution, adopted by General Assembly Resolution 377 (V), as crucial in enhancing the Assembly’s role in this domain.

Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al-Thani further stressed the need for the General Assembly to continue discussing the use of the veto within the broader representative organ of the United Nations. She noted that the Assembly’s role in maintaining international peace and security has grown significantly since the adoption of Resolution 377.

The State of Qatar also pointed out the Security Council’s inability to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza due to the use of the veto by permanent council members. This situation underscores the importance of the General Assembly’s efforts to foster discussions that reflect international consensus on halting Israeli aggression to protect Palestinian civilians.

Her Excellency stressed that Resolution 76/262 does not infringe upon the Security Council’s mandate or responsibilities. Instead, it focu
ses on the General Assembly’s role as outlined in the UN Charter, without impacting intergovernmental negotiations regarding Security Council reform.

Finally, Qatar reaffirmed its commitment to multilateralism and the centrality of the General Assembly’s role. The country underscored the importance of building on the veto initiative, encouraging the Assembly to make recommendations on issues where the Security Council has not fulfilled its responsibilities, especially in cases of human rights violations and threats to international peace and security.
