Qatar’s Role in Promoting International Law and Justice Highlighted in Geneva Dialogue

Geneva: HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar in Geneva, Dr. Hend bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah, emphasized that Qatar views international law as central to its foreign policy, aiming for peaceful coexistence among nations. This aligns with Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which prioritizes justice, the rule of law, and sustainable development.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Al Muftah’s remarks came during a High-Level Dialogue on Justice and Capacity-Building in International Law, organized by Qatar’s Permanent Mission to Geneva and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) at the United Nations Office in Geneva. She highlighted the current geopolitical complexities and the declining trust in multilateral institutions, advocating for a reimagined role of international law that addresses justice and global solidarity.

Dr. Al Muftah stressed that Qatar’s commitment to these principles is demonstrated through its active role in international mediation, conflict resolution, legal education support, and legal protection for refugees and displaced persons. She emphasized that international law is a tool for achieving comprehensive peace.

Highlighting the importance of empowering youth in the Global South, Dr. Al Muftah mentioned Qatari initiatives such as the Education Above All Foundation’s “Protecting Education in Conflict Zones” program, Silatech projects, and the Qatar Fund for Development’s investments. She emphasized that capacity building in international law is crucial for Qatar’s national sovereignty and strategic independence.

Dr. Al Muftah also discussed Qatar’s partnership with UNITAR and its participation in the “World Negotiation Day 2024” event during the Doha Forum, emphasizing the ethical dimension of negotiation. Qatar plans to organize two regional conferences in Doha this year, focusing on international law’s role in innovation, dispute resolution, and investment frameworks.

She stated that these initiatives reflect Qatar’s belief in the evolution of international law to serve future generations, noting its USD 60 million contribution to the Doha Program of Action for the Least Developed Countries (2022-2031) as a commitment to justice and legal empowerment.

Dr. Al Muftah concluded by describing capacity building in international law as a moral endeavor and a shared creative effort. She called for cooperation toward a more just and inclusive international legal system that respects all states and peoples.
