Doha: The Social and Economic Survey Research Institute at Qatar University has organized an international symposium on low-carbon transition strategies with the participation of a group of local and international experts, researchers, and policymakers. The symposium aimed to discuss the challenges posed by climate change and innovative solutions for the transition to sustainable energy use, and to shed light on policies and programs, especially in the GCC countries, to address these challenges.
According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Ayman Irbid, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies at Qatar University, stated that this symposium serves the goals of Qatar National Vision 2030. He emphasized that addressing climate change and preserving the environment are top priorities for the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which have initiated numerous institutions, strategies, laws, and international cooperation programs to tackle this significant issue.
Dr. Irbid further noted that the efforts of the
GCC countries continue to focus on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and global warming, with ongoing research and innovation programs, projects, and green investments aimed at economic diversification. The goal is to develop new sectors and transition towards an alternative and sustainable economy based on clean energy and advanced technology.
He confirmed that Qatar University has prioritized climate change within its programs, plans, research, educational, training, and other activities. Dr. Kaltham Al Ghanem, Director of the Social and Economic Survey Research Institute at Qatar University, remarked that the symposium comes at a critical time when the world is experiencing major challenges due to climate change. This situation necessitates exploring alternative strategies for renewable energy to ensure resource sustainability and protect human health and the environment.
Dr. Al Ghanem added that the symposium aimed to gather a distinguished group of researchers and experts to discuss innovative policies
based on scientific evidence, with a particular focus on empowering young generations to contribute to addressing these challenges.
