Shura Council Engages in Climate Dialogue at UN Conference in Baku.

BAKU: The Shura Council participated in the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which concluded Sunday in Baku, Azerbaijan. Members of the Shura Council, HE Nasser bin Mohammed Al Nuaimi and HE Nasser bin Mutarrif Al Humaidi, represented the council at the two-day conference.

According to Qatar News Agency, in his opening remarks at the first session titled “Making climate commitments a reality: parliaments’ role in raising mitigation ambition and implementing nationally determined contributions,” HE Nasser bin Mohammed Al Nuaimi highlighted Qatar’s role in climate efforts. He emphasized Qatar’s clear policies based on the Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

His Excellency underscored Qatar’s ambitious clean energy projects, noting that they are the largest renewable energy initiatives in the region. These projects aim to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and significantly decrease carbon emi
ssions. He stated Qatar’s goal to capture 5 million tons of carbon emissions annually by 2030, as part of its commitment to the Paris Agreement.

In another session on addressing climate vulnerability, HE Nasser bin Mutarrif Al Humaidi stressed the importance of an inclusive approach to climate action. He highlighted the needs of vulnerable nations, such as small island states and landlocked countries, citing the Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy 2021-2030, which focuses on energy efficiency and renewable energy.

HE Al Humaidi mentioned the Al Daayen solar power plant project, which aims to produce 500 megawatts by 2025, and Qatar’s support for the Green Climate Fund and renewable energy projects in Africa. These initiatives aim to improve living conditions in remote communities facing resource scarcity.

The conference tackled key topics, including drafting climate-related legislation, supporting clean technology innovation, and funding for developing countries to mitigate climate chang
e impacts. Participants emphasized the importance of climate justice and providing support to affected countries and communities.
