Spanish Parliament Passes Law Banning Arms Trade with Israel

Spain: Spain’s parliament has passed a law formally banning all arms exports to and imports from Israel, in a move aimed at ending what Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described as genocidal crimes in Gaza.

According to Qatar News Agency, the law was approved by a narrow majority of 178 votes to 169, with one abstention. It prohibits the sale and purchase of weapons and military technologies between the two countries and blocks the transit of military-use jet fuel through Spanish territory.

The legislation also bans advertisements for products originating from illegal Israeli settlements in Gaza and the West Bank. This decision follows the Spanish government’s earlier suspension of arms transactions with Israel after the outbreak of war in Gaza in October 2023.

Last month, Prime Minister Sanchez announced a new decree to enshrine the ban in law as part of broader measures against the Israeli assault on Gaza.
