Bred and owned by Al Shaqab Racing, HILALA broke her maiden in fine style on the first time of asking, landing the Prix de la Roque at Deauville, France on Wednesday, 27 November. Smartly away from the gates, she then settled in behind the leaders on the rail in the 1900-meter race for two-year-olds on the all-weather surface. Shuffled back to mid-division in the turn, once in the straight she took time to find her balance. Coming out to the center of the track 2 furlongs from the line, she was still several lengths off the leaders. The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained bay filly then showed an exceptional turn of foot to storm to lead and won with plenty in hand. She was ridden by Cristian Demuro, who also steered BRAMETOT to Classic success for the same owner/trainer combination.
HILALA is by Al Shaqab stallion TORONADO, who stands at Haras de Bouquetot in France. She is out of the MALIBU MOON mare EDEN’S MOON, who was a Group 1 winner in the United States. EDEN’S MOON was bought by Al Shaqab at Fasig-Tipton Sales in 2012.
