Al Shaqab Racing’s homebred AL MASHRAB (Style Vendome x Candicans) added a seventh victory to his scorecard in the Prix Albert Laborde at Dax, France, on Sunday, 13 September. While his win marked his return to the track after nearly a year out of competition, it confirmed that the five-year-old grey gelding has been hugely consistent homebred for his breeder and owner, Al Shaqab Racing. In 2019, AL MASHRAB lined up in five races, winning four of them and finishing runner-up in the remaining one.
Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, AL MASHRAB was ridden by Guillaume Trolley de Prevaux in the seven-furlong race for four-year-olds and older on Sunday. He settled at the rear in the early stages and just before the turn, he started to make ground. Once in the straight, he accelerated to join the long-time leader ART PREMIER (IRE) (Dutch Art x Slippers Best) and overtake him securing a comfortable one and a quarter-length win. ART PREMIER finished second to secure a one-two for the winning trainer Jean-Claude Rouget. He was ridden by Jean-Bernard Eyquem. M. Guarnieri’s trainee, TOY ROOM (IRE) (Most Improved x Shiver Stream), was further two lengths behind in third under Guillaume Guedj-Gay.
AL MASHRAB is a son of Al Shaqab’s stallion STYLE VENDÔME out of CANDICANS (DANSILI), a full sister of the Group 1 winner and sire ZAMBEZI SUN.
