AL GAZI, MARID, BLACK PEARL shine on Guineas Day

Three weeks after shedding his maiden status, Sheikh Faisal Bin Hamad Bin Jassim Al Thani’s AL GAZI (Havana Gold x Rock Lily) stepped up in class impressively, winning the THOROUGHBRED GUINEAS (QA Gr 3) (3yo only) in a thrilling finish to the turf feature at the Al Rayyan Park on Thursday. Anas Al Seyabi, riding the Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malk- trained colt for the first time, guided the 3YO to a close half a length victory at the post. The colt has remained unbeaten this season winning for the second straight time. Jockey Luca Maniezzi once again guided a Stefano Ibido-saddled horse to runner up finish on the day with MARKHOR (Frankel x Vorda) finishing second in the colours of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani. The Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani-schooled ARABIC CHANNEL (English Channel x Mahogany Lane) had to settle for third by a nose under Tomas Lukasek.

Umm Qarn’s MARID (TM Fred Texas x Al Dahma) made a winning a debut around Qatar’s Al Rayyan Park on Thursday emerging victorious in the PUREBRED ARABIAN GUINEAS (4YO only) in a thrilling fashion. The Alban Elie Marie De Mieulle-trained colt was well held in Group 1 company at Longchamp last time round, but announced his arrival in Qatar with a close win under Ronan Thomas on Thursday. The 4YO beat the Hadi Nasser Rashid Al Ramzani-schooled AJS MOADDIE (AF AlBahar x Gabie De Carrere), ridden by Tomas Lukasek, by half a length, while the Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki-saddled FUWAIRAT (Amer x Sakina De Faust) was ridden to third by Eduardo Pedroza.

Raced only once coming into Thursday’s LOCAL THOROUGHBRED GUINEAS (3YO only), Abdulatif Hussain Al Emadi’s BLACK PEARL (Footstepsinthesand x Ella) made it two victories in a row. Saddled by Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki, the gelding, who had won a sprint feature on his April debut, returned to the turf track at Al Rayyan Park for a miler. Under a fantastic ride by Eduardo Pedroza the 3YO won comfortably with three lengths and a quarter to spare, with Luca Maniezzi helming the Stefano Ibido-trained IFREET (Toronado x Bella Varenna) to second place in the colours of Abdulhadi Mana Al Hajri. Another Al Malki ward, AL KHOR SURPRISE (Abide With Me x Arabian Art) completed the top three under Tomas Lukasek.

Qatari jockey Rashid Ali Al Marri rode his second winner of the season guiding Al Thumama Racing’s QASSY (Mared Al Sahra x The Write Stuff) to a fine victory in the PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (90 & above). In the mile long run, the apprentice jockey helmed the 9YO to a one and a half-length victory as the oldest contender in the race won for the ninth time in his career.

Al Shahania Stud’s MON’NIA (Amer x Margouia) made a winning start to her career in Qatar. Saddled by Julian Colin Smart, the filly had Tomas Lukasek in the saddle for the PUREBRED ARABIAN PLATE (3 Year Olds) in the 1850m run. After being well held in her last outing, a Group 1 in France, the run on Thursday on turf was the perfect introduction as she won comfortably with two lengths and three quarters to spare.

Nasser Saeed Al Eida’s RETURN TO SENDERS (Sir Prancealot x Bougainvilia) went one better than his last outing to shed his maiden status in fantastic fashion on Thursday. In the THOROUGHBRED PLATE (2 Year Olds) (Class 2), JP Guillambert had Jassim Mohamed Ghazali’s ward rush to the lead off the gates in the six-furlong sprint and then held on throughout, even as Adrie De Vries and his partner Think Big mounted a late challenge. However, Return To Senders held off at the post by half a length.

Having started his season with a place in the frame, Abdulhadi Mana Al Hajri’s DARK PURSUIT (Pastoral Pursuits x Ogre) entered the winner’s circle only the second time in Qatar. Stefano Ibido’s ward had Luca Maniezzi for company in the THOROUGHBRED PLATE (3 Year Olds) (Class 3) and the two did well to go past the post one and a half length ahead of the competition to pick up a fine win in the six-furlong sprint.

Hassan Ali Alabdulmalik’s BEACH SAMBA (Lope De Verga x Braziliz) completed a hat-trick of wins with some spectacular pace on the home straight on Thursday. In the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 4) (85 & below), jockey Ryan Curatolo and his 7YO partner only got into the contention in the final two furlongs, having stayed back for the bulk of the race. Coming off the bend in the miler, the gelding showed some amazing turn of foot going past the entire field and finishing with a length and a quarter to spare.

Sheikh Faisal Bin Jassim Bin Thani Al Thani’s ADMIRAL (Shamardal x Raheeba) registered his third victory this month, winning the first race of the meeting on Thursday. In the mile-long LOCAL THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (80 & below), Eduardo Pedroza had the Ibrahim Saeed Ibrahim Al Malki-trained colt run midfield as Ibn Elmalik set the pace up front. The field spread and the pace quickened on the home straight with Pedroza giving a go-ahead and his mount steadily took the advantage to win by three-quarters of a length.
