The 3-year-old colt AL RUFAA (FR) (Kingman x Clarmina), trained by John Gosden for Al Shaqab Racing, was the easy winner at Kempton, UK on Monday, 13 July, night in a 1,400-metre handicap for 3YOs rated 0-78. Carrying top weight under jockey Robert Havlin, he sat in mid-division before coming to take the lead inside the final 400 metres, pulling away impressively to win by 4 ¾ lengths. He ran through the line strongly, suggesting that a mile should be well within his reach. ROMAN MELODY (GB) (Holy Roman Emperor) was the runner-up under William Carson for trainer David Elsworth. VASARI (USA) (Muhaarar) was a further neck behind in third under Jim Crowley for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.
AL RUFAA was making just his fourth start of his young career. He ran twice as a 2-year-old, winning his second start. He made his seasonal return at Newmarket in June, but was too fresh and ran keen over the stiff Rowley mile track. At Kempton, he settled well and found his rhythm, allowing him to display his considerable talent.
AL RUFAA is by leading sire KINGMAN and was bred in France by Jean-Pierre Dubois, one of France’s top breeders. He was bought at the Arqana August Yearling Sale in 2018.
