Syrian President Establishes Transitional Justice National Committee

Doha: Syrian President Ahmad Al Sharaa issued a decree today establishing the National Commission for Transitional Justice: Syrian President Ahmad Al Sharaa has taken a significant step towards addressing past grievances by issuing a decree to establish the National Commission for Transitional Justice.

According to Qatar News Agency, the decree draws its authority from the constitutional declaration and Presidential Decree No. 20 of 2025, which initially created the framework for the National Commission for Transitional Justice. Article (1) of the decree specifies the composition of the Commission, which will include a chairperson, a deputy member, and twelve additional members. Furthermore, Article (2) outlines that following their notification of this decree, Commission members will commence their duties under the chairperson’s supervision, with responsibilities allocated according to the Commission’s internal regulations.

The establishment of the National Commission for Transitional Justice was initially set in motion by a presidential decree in May. The Commission is tasked with critical responsibilities such as holding accountable those responsible for wartime violations, providing redress for victims, and formally acknowledging their suffering.
