The G7 countries agree to maintain sanctions pressure on Russia

The Finance Ministers and heads of central banks of the Group of Seven (G7) countries affirmed their intention to “impose and implement sanctions and other economic measures” against Russia and to resist its attempts to circumvent the sanctions.

A joint statement issued after a 3-day meeting in the Japanese city of Niigata said: “We affirm our unwavering firmness to impose and implement sanctions and other economic measures to further undermine Russia’s capabilities, and we remain steadfast in confronting any attempts to circumvent our sanctions.”

The participants in the meeting also affirmed their intention to “continue to strengthen cooperation to monitor cross-border transactions between Russia and other countries.”

The statement added, “We also intend to take new measures targeting Russia’s financial sphere, and if necessary – closely monitor the effectiveness of the cap on Russian oil and petroleum products prices to ensure that the measures achieve their goal and take any necessary and appropriate implementation measures.”
