The Iraqi army regains control of PKK military points on Qara Chog Mountain

Baghdad - The Iraqi army forces regained control over several military points that belonged to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) in the "Qara Chog" mountain near the Makhmour district of Nineveh.

The Kurdish Rudaw media network reported on Thursday, “The 14th Division of the Iraqi Army regained control of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s military sites on Qarachog Mountain overlooking the Makhmour camp,” in the Makhmour district of Nineveh Governorate.

The PKK announced earlier Thursday the withdrawal of all its forces from the Makhmour camp to "legitimate defense areas" in reference to Qandil and other areas in the Kurdistan region.

The Central Command of the People's Defense Center (NPG) explained in a statement that it had withdrawn its forces from Makhmour to "legitimate defense areas in a hidden, organized and planned manner for security reasons, and now we do not have any forces left in Makhmour refugee camp."

The PKK indicated that it sent its forces to the Makhmour camp in 2014 to protect refugees and confront ISIS attacks, adding: “The leadership of our movement reached the conclusion that our forces had accomplished their mission here and decided to withdraw them from Makhmour, and since the beginning of September, we have withdrawn our forces.”

The withdrawal of PKK forces comes at a time when the camp was subjected to Turkish bombing twice this month.
