The Iraqi Geologists Syndicate demands a fair and equitable agreement in the waters with the Turkish side

The Iraqi Geologists Syndicate called for signing a fair and just agreement with the Turkish side to achieve water security in Iraq.

The head of the Iraqi Geologists Syndicate, Saad Obaid Muhammad, said in a press statement: ‘The water crisis in Iraq has become a major dilemma on the humanitarian, social and economic levels, which has a negative impact on all aspects of life in Iraq, reaching a critical degree that constitutes a real threat to Iraqi national security.’

The head of the Geologists Syndicate added: ‘We are completely certain that Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani has the sincere political will to turn the water issue with Turkey, with all its internal and external complications, into a priority in the Iraqi-Turkish negotiations, leading to the signing of a fair and equitable agreement with the Turkish side to secure water for the Tigris and the Euphrates Rivers and achieving water security in Iraq.’

He pointed out: ‘The openness to Turkey, especially in the development road project, as
well as Turkey’s invitation to establish joint strategic investment projects in the agricultural sector and the food industry sector in Iraq, will enhance the level of partnership and economic and investment interconnection with it.’

He stressed the need to support and activate joint technical committees to build a cooperative and flexible administration in the field of international waters shared between the two countries and create mechanisms to strengthen relations and exchange information related to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to confront the challenges of water shortages and ensure the optimal exploitation of water supplies in a sustainable and equitable manner for both countries.

He stressed the Syndicate’s readiness to work side by side with the relevant government institutions to serve the highest interests of Iraq.
