Doha: Advisor to the Prime Minister and Official Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Majed bin Mohammed Al Ansari, has highlighted the upcoming 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly as a crucial opportunity to reaffirm the international stance on the Palestinian cause and the two-state solution. This session, scheduled for this month, is particularly significant against the backdrop of efforts led by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the French Republic.
According to Qatar News Agency, during a weekly press briefing by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, Dr. Al Ansari emphasized Qatar’s steadfast commitment to multilateral action and enhancing the United Nations’ role in international issues. He stressed the importance of ensuring Palestinian representation in all international forums.
Dr. Al Ansari pointed out the lack of response from Israel regarding a ceasefire proposal in the Gaza Strip. He remarked on the recent escalation in Gaza, especially the occupation of Gaza City amid a deteriorating humanitarian situation, leading to numerous civilian casualties and hostages, which Israel claims it is trying to free.
He noted that any alternative proposals depend on a genuine willingness to reach an agreement. Despite intensive communications with the US and other regional and international partners, no new developments have emerged. The spokesperson underscored the priority of ending the humanitarian crisis and criticized linking humanitarian aid to prisoner and hostage exchanges, labeling it as unacceptable blackmail and a violation of international law.
Dr. Al Ansari also mentioned Qatar’s role as a mediator, noting that it relies solely on pushing for agreements and international pressure. He highlighted international condemnation of Israel’s recent actions in Gaza and potential annexation of the West Bank. These actions weaken Israel’s position internationally, as the Palestinian state’s legitimacy is recognized by UN resolutions and the broader international community, excluding Israel.
He revealed ongoing contacts to develop new proposals for an agreement and affirmed Qatar’s openness to all realistic solutions. Currently, the only official offer is the plan previously announced and approved by Hamas.
In another context, Dr. Al Ansari discussed Qatar’s mediation efforts on various international issues, including reuniting children affected by the war in Ukraine and Russia with their families. He confirmed Qatar’s support for efforts to end the war, including the forthcoming summit between Russia and Ukraine.
Regarding the Arab Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Cairo on Thursday, Dr. Al Ansari stated that regional issues, particularly the situation in Gaza, will be a focal point, emphasizing the importance of these meetings in coordinating Arab stances.
At the briefing’s start, Dr. Al Ansari outlined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ activities during the week, including work by the Joint Higher Committee between Qatar and Egypt, and meetings with Ukrainian and Egyptian officials.
In addition, HE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Sultan bin Saad Al Muraikhi led Qatar’s delegation at the GCC Ministerial Council meeting and the GCC-Japan Strategic Dialogue. He also met with Japanese and Korean officials.
Dr. Al Ansari mentioned other diplomatic engagements, including meetings held by HE Minister of State for International Cooperation Maryam bint Ali bin Nasser Al Misnad with international officials and phone calls with Afghan representatives.
He also noted that HE Minister of State at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Dr. Mohammed bin Abdulaziz bin Saleh Al Khulaifi received a call from Sudanese officials and will participate in the Bled Strategic Forum in Slovenia, where he will deliver a speech and meet with senior officials.
