UNHCR Calls for Support to Syria as Over 1.2 Million Refugees Return

Doha: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has urged greater global support for Syria to resolve its refugee crisis and enable voluntary returns, calling the current moment pivotal for rebuilding millions of lives. UNHCR reported that since December 2024, over 1.2 million Syrian refugees and 1.7 million internally displaced people have returned home, underscoring severe humanitarian and economic challenges.

According to Qatar News Agency, UNHCR stressed the urgent need for essential services, education, healthcare, housing, and jobs, to sustain refugee returns and prevent renewed displacement. Since 2011, Syria has faced one of the world’s largest displacement crises, with over 5.9 million refugees in neighboring countries and millions more displaced internally, according to UNHCR.
