The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) announced that it has funds to continue work until next September.
The Agency’s Commissioner-General, Philippe Lazzarini, said in press statements: ‘We worked tirelessly with partners to restore confidence in the Agency, after several countries suspended their funding following Israeli allegations in January that a number of UNRWA employees participated in the October 7 attack carried out by Hamas on Israel.’
Lazzarini indicated that new pledges of funds would help ensure emergency operations until September.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, appealed to donors to fund UNRWA, pointing out the absence of any alternative to it, despite Israeli criticism.
Guterres warned at a donor conference that the suffering Palestinians would lose a ‘vital lifeline’ without UNRWA.
According to Guterres, 195 UNRWA employees were killed in the war, which is the highest death toll for employees in the history of the Unite
d Nations.
