US President Signs Executive Order to Impose 25 Percent Tariffs on Indian Goods

Washington: US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order imposing 25 percent tariffs on Indian goods due to its purchases of Russian oil.

According to Qatar News Agency, the White House said in a post on the X platform that these new tariffs are in addition to the previous 25 percent tariffs, which are scheduled to take effect tomorrow, Thursday, in conjunction with tariffs that Trump considers reciprocal and will take effect within 21 days, according to the order.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement that the US decision to impose additional tariffs on India to stop purchasing Russian oil is deeply regrettable, considering it unjustified. The ministry stated that Indian imports are based on market criteria and are generally aimed at ensuring energy security for the country’s 1.4 billion people.

The ministry added that it was deeply regrettable that the US has chosen to impose additional tariffs on India due to actions taken by several other countries in pursuit of their national interests.

It is worth noting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a firm stance against these American threats before the official announcement of the new tariffs, urging his citizens to purchase domestic goods, while his administration indicated that it would continue purchasing Russian oil.
