Washington: US President Donald Trump discussed developments in the Middle East and the Ukraine crisis during a phone call today with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.
According to Qatar News Agency, Trump communicated that Putin had renewed an offer for Russia to manage enriched uranium that the United States was demanding Iran hand over, reportedly amounting to 970 pounds. Trump noted the conversation was extensive and emphasized to Putin the significance of participating in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump further declared that the United States would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, noting that Iran's military capabilities, including its navy, air force, air defenses, radar systems, and a majority of its missile capabilities, had been neutralized. He mentioned that 90 percent of missile manufacturing facilities were destroyed.
Yuri Ushakov, an aide to the Russian President, commented that the two leaders paid particular attention to the situation in Iran during their call. Putin viewed Trump's decision to extend the ceasefire with Iran as a correct move, suggesting it allows room for negotiations and helps stabilize the overall situation. However, he cautioned that any US ground operation in Iran could pose risks.
Ushakov also revealed that Putin proposed ideas to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, underscoring Moscow's commitment to maintain contact with all involved parties to contain escalation and promote negotiation efforts.
On the Ukraine crisis, Trump reportedly conveyed to Ushakov his belief that an agreement to conclude the conflict was near. In turn, Putin stated that Russian forces maintained the initiative on the ground.
