The World Food Program (WFP) announced the launch of an emergency operation to provide food to more than 800,000 people in Gaza and the West Bank, who are facing difficult conditions and shortages in food, water, and basic supplies.
The program called for the establishment of humanitarian corridors to facilitate the entry of relief aid and assistance into Gaza, and to provide safe and unhindered passage for its employees and basic goods.
The program said, in a press statement published today, that it urgently needs to ensure its ability to access and finance to support those in need, stressing that about USD 17.3 million is needed in the next four weeks to deal with this critical situation.
The program, in cooperation with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), distributed ready-to-eat food items to 73,000 displaced people in shelters in Gaza, amid fears of running out of vital resources in the city such as food, water and electricity, with the severely damaged infrastructure hindering the producing, supplying and distributing food.
WFP Regional Director in Palestine, Samer Abdel Jaber described the current situation as devastating, stressing that the program is working hard on the ground to ensure that those in need, those who have fled their homes, and those living in shelters, receive the food and assistance they need to survive.
He added that the program, in cooperation with UNRWA, reached 180,000 people in shelters, by providing ready-to-eat food, including fresh bread from bakeries that are still able to operate in Gaza.
