White House Urges Congress to Approve $1.5 Trillion Defense Budget Amid Middle East Conflict

Washington: The White House administration has urged Congress to approve an unprecedented $1.5 trillion defense budget for the upcoming year. This request aims to bolster military operations and replenish weapon stockpiles amid the ongoing conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.

According to Qatar News Agency, this proposed budget marks the largest annual increase in Pentagon spending since World War II, representing a more than 40 percent increase over the current year's budget. The administration's call comes at a time when American reports indicate that the cost of the Middle Eastern war could escalate to $2 billion per day.

To help manage the budget increase, the White House has suggested approximately $73 billion in cuts to non-defense expenditures. Former President Trump highlighted the critical need for prioritizing military investment during wartime, even if it means reducing federal social programs. He urged Congress to approve the majority of the budget-over $1.1 trillion-through the standard annual government funding process, while advocating for the remaining $350 billion to be passed using a bipartisan legislative maneuver similar to the one Republicans used to secure tax cuts without Democratic support last year.

Additionally, the proposal includes increased funding for federal law enforcement, allocating more than $40 billion for the Department of Justice. Republican leaders have shown a willingness to consider this approach, as they are keen to increase spending on defense and immigration enforcement. Recent spending bills have largely preserved funding for programs that the White House now seeks to reduce or eliminate.

The US currently faces an annual deficit nearing $2 trillion, with a total debt exceeding $39 trillion, which poses challenges for new spending without further exacerbating the deficit.
