5.1-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Southern California

An earthquake measuring 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale jolted parts of Southern California, north of Los Angeles.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the quake, which struck roughly 7 km southeast of the Southern California community of Ojai in Ventura County. It was followed by several smaller aftershocks.

The US Tsunami Warning System said there was no threat of a tsunami from the earthquake.

California is exposed earthquakes regularly. Seismologists warn that an earthquake capable of causing widespread destruction will most likely hit this state within the next 30 years.

In 1994, a 6.7-magnitude earthquake struck California, killing at least 60 people and causing damage estimated at $10 billion. A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit San Francisco County in California in 1989, killing 67 people.
