National Committee for International Humanitarian Law Participates in Joint Workshop with Jordanian Counterpart

Amman: The National Committee for International Humanitarian Law of Qatar is participating in the joint workshop organized by the National Committee for International Humanitarian Law in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan on The Status of International Humanitarian Law in Contemporary Armed Conflicts, with the participation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).

According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari delegation to the workshop is headed by HE Saeed bin Abdullah Al Suwaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice and Chairman of Qatar’s National Committee for International Humanitarian Law. During the opening of the workshop, His Excellency reaffirmed the State of Qatar’s commitment to humanitarian work and its support for international efforts to resolve conflicts through dialogue and negotiations, emphasizing dialogue as an effective means to achieve stability.

He highlighted the significance of the workshop organized by Jordan’s National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, reflecting on the cooperation framed by the memorandum of understanding signed between Qatar and Jordan in Doha in April 2016. This cooperation has resulted in annual seminars and workshops between Doha and Amman, aiming to raise awareness of International Humanitarian Law among stakeholders in both countries.

His Excellency also noted that since the 12th meeting of Arab Committees for International Humanitarian Law in Doha in October 2023, Qatar’s National Committee has been working on coordinating with other Arab committees to draft a proposal for establishing an Arab Committee for International Humanitarian Law under the League of Arab States. He described this initiative as a long-held aspiration in the field.

He further mentioned that the Standing Committee on Legal Affairs at the League of Arab States is preparing for a meeting dedicated to discussing the establishment of the Arab Committee for International Humanitarian Law. He emphasized the importance of participation from all Arab committees to draft the proposal for submission to the Arab Ministerial Council for approval.

The workshop, spanning three days, will feature Qatar sharing its experience in implementing International Humanitarian Law nationally. Discussions will include papers on the origins, foundations, and principles of international humanitarian law, the categories of protected persons, and those with special protections. Various legal and judicial topics, including international criminal justice, challenges facing IHL, and the impact of technological advancements and cyberspace in contemporary armed conflicts, will be addressed.
