Senior UN Official: Ceasefire Only Way to End Gaza’s Suffering

New york: Assistant Secretary-General for Europe in the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Miroslav Jen??a, emphasized the gravity of the Israeli government’s recent decision concerning the Gaza Strip, warning that it could lead to another intense phase of conflict, with ramifications extending beyond Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories.

According to Qatar News Agency, during an emergency Security Council meeting on the Middle East, Jen??a declared that a complete, immediate, and permanent ceasefire is the sole solution to alleviate the significant humanitarian distress in Gaza. He also urged for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and called on Israel to comply with international humanitarian law, ensuring the swift, safe, and unobstructed delivery of substantial humanitarian aid to the affected population.

Jen??a highlighted the importance of civilian protection, including humanitarian workers, who are in need of assistance. He firmly stated, “There is no military solution to the armed conflict in Gaza or the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.” He further asserted that a sustainable resolution is unattainable without ending Israel’s unlawful occupation and achieving a viable two-state solution, emphasizing that Gaza must remain an integral part of a Palestinian State.

UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres also expressed serious concern regarding Israel’s decision to “take control of Gaza City,” describing it as a perilous escalation that could exacerbate the dire situation for millions of Palestinians and endanger additional lives, including hostages still in captivity.

Meanwhile, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Trk, has called for an immediate cessation of Israel’s plan to assume full military control over the occupied Gaza Strip.
